# Claude Code vs Cursor: Which One to Use

> Claude Code is a terminal agent; Cursor is an agent-first editor. Where each one wins, and why the Claude Code extension installs into Cursor too.

They overlap heavily now, so the honest answer is that this is a workflow choice, not a
capability contest. **Claude Code is a terminal agent; Cursor is an editor built around an
agent.** Both plan, both edit many files, both speak MCP.

## 1. Where Claude Code wins

- **The shell is the point.** It runs your tests, greps, checks `git status`, reads the output
  and acts on it, in one loop.
- **It's editor-agnostic.** Keep whatever editor you like and put the agent beside it.
- **Automation.** It runs [headless in CI](/guides/claude-code-headless-ci/) and behind
  [hooks](/guides/claude-code-hooks/).
- **Configuration is files.** `CLAUDE.md`, `.claude/agents/`, `settings.json` — reviewable in a
  PR.

## 2. Where Cursor wins

- **The AI is inside the editing surface**, not next to it: tab completions as you type, inline
  edits, a chat that already sees your open files.
- **You prefer a GUI** and fast local edits to the file in front of you.
- **Its own rules and plugins.** Cursor reads `.cursor/rules/*.mdc` and `AGENTS.md` — see
  [the Cursor rules file](/guides/cursor-rules-file/) and
  [MCP servers in Cursor](/guides/cursor-mcp-servers/).

## 3. You don't have to choose

This is the part people miss: Cursor is a VS Code fork, and the Claude Code extension installs
into it. Anthropic's docs list a direct install link for Cursor alongside the VS Code one, plus
Open VSX for other forks.

```text
Search "Claude Code" in the Extensions view
```

What it does: installs the same `anthropic.claude-code` extension inside Cursor, so you get
Cursor's editing loop and a Claude Code panel in one window. Details:

## Verify it worked

Pick by the last thing that annoyed you, then test that specific pain on real work for a week.
Retyping context into a chat box? You want a project rules file. An agent editing something you
didn't sanction? You want [plan mode and permissions](/guides/claude-code-permissions/). Pasting
test output back in by hand? You want a terminal [agent](/glossary/#agent) that runs it itself.

If the week doesn't settle it, the tools are close enough that it doesn't matter. Next:
[your first Claude Code session](/guides/first-claude-code-session/).
