Claude vs ChatGPT for Coding: Which to Use
A practical split for real coding work — and the deciding fact most comparisons skip: Claude Code needs a paid plan, ChatGPT answers questions on free.

Both are good, and the brand matters less than the shape of the tool. The real split is chat versus agent: pasting code into a chat window is a different activity from letting something read your repo, edit files and run your tests.
1. Reach for Claude when
- You’re editing across many files or a whole repo.
- You want it to plan first and make reviewable changes — see plan mode.
- You’re pasting big files or specs and want them held in one long context.
- You want the agent in your terminal or editor rather than in a browser tab.
2. Reach for ChatGPT when
- It’s a quick one-off snippet or a “how do I do X” question.
- You want images, data analysis or voice in the same place — see clean spreadsheet data with ChatGPT.
- You’re exploring an unfamiliar API conversationally, before any code exists.
3. Check what your plan includes
This decides it for a lot of people, and most comparisons skip it:
Claude Code requires Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise, or a Claude Console account.
The free Claude.ai plan does not include Claude Code access.
What it does: rules out the terminal agent on a free account. ChatGPT will still answer coding questions on its free tier, and Claude’s own chat interface works free too — it’s the agent that’s paid.
4. Honestly: the agent matters more than the brand
A tool that shows diffs and asks before editing beats copy-pasting code back and forth, whichever model is behind it. That is true of Claude Code and equally true of Cursor — see Claude Code vs Cursor.
Verify it worked
Take a real task you’ve been putting off — a small refactor with tests. Do it once by pasting into a chat, once with an agent in the repo. The difference shows up in how much retyping you did, not in any single answer.
